Take a deep breath

Do not let your to-do list rob you of joy.

I’ve said this 50,000 times today while hyperventilating….

There is a list of small things that need to get done between now and my move.

There are also a lot of people who are more important than my to-do list.

I do not want to be so task oriented that I am not enjoying my time with friends and family.

So, I’m going to take several deep breaths and prioritize….and I won’t need a brown paper bag to do so.

I say all of this to encourage you to not be bullied by your to-do list.

Don’t allow anyone or anything to steal your joy.

Life is way too short for that kind of nonsense.

3 days and counting

My posts will probably be short this week.

I spent today packing for my move and visiting with friends.

My car is ready for pick up in the morning, so I’m all set for my Friday morning departure date.

Things are falling into place…

I still need to find a bank and a car insurance company, but those things won’t be hard to do once I arrive in Tulsa.

It’s hard to believe that I’m leaving Alabama for a second time….

The adventure of following God will take you places that are beyond your wildest dreams.

I’m entering 2016 by accomplishing something that’s been on my heart for about 5 years: going to Rhema!

Never underestimate what you can do with help from the Lord. He will order your steps.

Halfway there

I just hit the 6 month mark of daily blogging.

Hard to believe all that can take place in 6 months….

Thanks for going on this journey with me.

I told you when I started that a blog is pretty much a journal if no one reads it.

You guys have encouraged me so much and I can’t wait to see what the next 6 months holds.

I move to Tulsa on Friday. It’s cool to think about documenting my time at Rhema. There’s a lot to take in and sharing it with you will make the experience much richer.

Once again, thanks for your love and support.

This goal that seemed impossible 6 months ago is now halfway over.

I’m learning that most limitations are self-imposed.

Every good gift

I gotta good deal today!

I needed to replace my brown boots and the sale was amazing.

Me-maw bought me a new pair of jeans and received a coupon for 50% off a pair of ladies boots. She then turned around and gave me $10 toward the boots, so they only cost me $25.

The shoes were $65 and I paid $25…

I’m not one to pray for closer parking spots or anything, but it was so exciting to see how everything just worked out.

And there’s nothing wrong with that happening either. The book of James says that every good gift comes from the Father above.

We need to keep this scripture in mind because too often God ends up looking like Scrooge.

He loves us.

He wants what’s best for us.

Listen, this post is not meant to make God out to be a slot machine.

Corvettes won’t fall from the sky and giving an offering to a televangelist won’t make you rich.

But God does give good gifts to His children.

He will take care of you.

So, today I thank God for a good deal on my shoes.

On top of everything else He’s done, which is much bigger and more important, I am thankful for this fun gift as well.

The everyday superhero

I’m always amazed at shows where there’s a masked hero and no one recognizes him or her.

How is it possible that none of their closest friends and family figure it out?

No wonder the job of a hero is lonely work.

I guess that’s why every hero needs a sidekick. You gotta share that burden with someone, right?

We all have to grapple with this desire to be seen and recognized for our contributions.

On the one side, there’s nothing wrong with giving credit where credit is due.

On the other side, doing something out of a self-seeking, look at me attitude is a bad idea.

And I think that’s why encouraging others is one of my favorite things to do.

Just by paying attention you can brighten someone’s day. You also help that individual see things they are overlooking about themselves.

Don’t miss out on an opportunity to encourage the people around you.

You never know when one small act of kindness can save the day.

I’m a firm believer that encouragement is a super power.

Untold stories

I want to write fiction this year.

Writing this blog comes so naturally. I enjoy writing about life and everyday things.

The conversational tone is my favorite. That’s why travelogues are my favorite book genre.
In my college creative writing classes, my attempts at poetry were pitiful and my short stories were not impressive.
It frustrated me because I have been a reader my whole life. Visualizing a story as I read is second nature.

So why can’t I write about the stories I see so clearly in my head?

Two of my goals this year are to improve my writing skills and to write a few short stories.

The only way I can achieve these goals is to change the way I see myself as a writer.

I’m not some untalented wannabe who is barely scraping by.

I can write.

I have a voice.

I will not give up.

There are stories inside of me, as well as the everyday adventures I enjoy sharing.

The hope of a new year

2016 New Year

2016 is just hours away. The hope of a new year is upon us.

I know there are naysayers out there.

Can you hear them?

“New Year’s is just another day. If you can’t change today, you’ll never change in a new year.”

They’re not incorrect….just a little too cynical for my taste.

January 1, 2016 will be another day. Nothing magical will happen to make change any easier.

But the new year is special.

The possibilities are endless and you will change in 2016 because it’s impossible to remain alive and not change in one way or another.

The choice is up to you: Will you use the new year to change for the better or for the worse?

I looked in the mirror today and didn’t recognize myself. I have been changing so much and so fast that it surprised me.

Who is this chick looking back at me?

I’m moving 11 hours away to follow God into the adventure of a lifetime.

2015 changed me and I am better for it.

My emotions are all over the place.

I’ve been fighting back tears and waxing nostalgia and bubbling with excitement all at the same time.

Dad tells me I’m normal, but I feel a little bit crazy. I’ve never felt this much emotion at one time before. (At least, not in a healthy way.)

Take some time this New Year’s Eve to feel things out.

Count your blessings.

Set some goals.

Look in the mirror.

I bet you won’t recognize yourself in 2017.

Time for friends

I had a great day with my friends. We were finally able to get together and hang out.

My friend Andrea from Marion and my friend Sam from Birmingham met up with me this afternoon at the Galleria.

We ate lunch at California Pizza Kitchen, got a coffee at Starbucks, and shopped at Old Navy.

It was so cool to be together because two different aspects of my life are now connected.

Andrea and Sam have been friends since college and I have been friends with Andrea since she became the librarian at Judson.

Sam and I met this past January when I started learning sign language.

I really enjoyed myself today. Hang out times with friends don’t happen as much as I’d like.

Another goal for 2016 is to schedule more time for important relationships.

An outstretched hand

There’s nothing wrong with being weak sometimes. We all need help.

The Bible talks about how God is our strength when we are weak.

The Bible also talks about bearing one another’s burdens and helping each other carry them to the Lord.

I’m not the best at allowing others to see me down. We’ve talked about this many times, but here’s something new I’m learning:

An element of building trust in a relationship is to ask for help.

Do you know that it’s hard for others to trust you when you won’t ask for help?

Dr. Brene Brown talks about this in her lecture on The Anatomy of Trust (It’s a free class she offers at  courageworks.com).

Slap away an extended hand too many times and you’ll find yourself all alone.

One of my goals in 2016 is to get better at asking for and accepting help.

I know that the Lone Ranger mentality is glorified in western culture, but it’s a myth.

You can’t go it alone.

A sense of satisfaction

I spent most of today soaking wet.

My personal days are all used up, but the work is done.

Things have been taken to Goodwill and the dump.

The gutters are cleaned out. (This happened in the pouring rain by the way.)

But it’s all done!!!!

The only thing left to do is to put together a few bookshelves and get the Reading Room in order.

Pushing through when you feel out of steam is the only way to get projects finished.

Then you’re left with an amazing sense of accomplishment.

I know this is the only thing I’ve talked about since Christmas.

Bear with me, okay?

Our family is still sending up shouts of victory. I’ll talk about something different tomorrow.
