Thanksgiving Blessings

rbtc-sealThanksgiving is my favorite holiday.

It’s a great time to reflect on the blessings of being in Christ—He’s given us everything!—and to recall all the ways His hand is moving in our lives.

Did I mention that turkey and dressing is one of my most favorite meals?

There’s nothing like a good pan of dressing (or stuffing as it is known by my friends above the Mason-Dixon Line) to make the heart happy.

And while I am thrilled that my family is invading Broken Arrow to visit me, I was reminded that many of my fellow Rhema classmates will not be sitting around the dinner table with their natural family.

The good news, though, is that no one will be alone because the Rhema family is huge—and worldwide!

Many graduates add extra dinner plates to their tables.

Many current students bring a passel of people home with them for the week.

I’m reminded of the words of Jesus in Mark 10:29-30:

Assuredly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands, for My sake and the gospel’s, who shall not receive a hundredfold now in this time—houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions—and in the age to come, eternal life.

I am so thankful for the friendships that are burgeoning this school year!

My more extroverted personality makes me a social butterfly, so leaving the place where my roots run deepest was a challenge for me.

Jesus’ promise, however, remains a source of constant comfort and encouragement.

I have sat around numerous tables with new friends, both students and alumni, since moving to Oklahoma. Every single person has told me the same thing:

If you ever need anything—and I mean anything—do not hesitate to call.

This one statement illustrates the Rhema family at its best. And it’s one of the many reasons I give thanks for Rhema Bible Training College.

Memorial Day 2016

This Memorial Day was awesome.

Here are the highlights:

  • Slept in
  • Hung out with 2 of my friends at the mall and their house
  • Ate Chick-fil-A
  • Had my first visitor over at my new place
  • Watched a movie
  • Ate pizza
  • Laughed a lot
  • Finished a book

The day was quite restful.

I’m so thankful for servicemen–the fallen heroes, the veterans, and those who are active duty–because the life I enjoy wouldn’t be possible without their sacrifices.

Did I mention my sister Sofia turned 12?

Wow…

I’m thankful for Sofia’s sweet spirit and for how she so willingly embraced me as her big sister 5 years ago.

Her friendship and love mean a lot to me.

She even laughs at my jokes sometimes! (Wink, wink)

Happy Birthday, Sof!

Being Present

Hard to believe school will be finished up in 4 weeks!

My first 2 terms at Rhema have been awesome. I’m learning a lot and it’s going to be weird to be done until September.

But there will be plenty to do until then.

I’ll be working full time and my summer reading list is taking shape.

Several of my favorite authors have books out, so I plan to read as much as I can.

For now, I’m buckling down and enjoying the term to the fullest.

Something I’m learning is how to be as present as possible wherever  I’m at in life.

I like The Message translation of Matthew 6:34:

“Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don’t get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes.”

Jesus’ advice to be present was to not only safeguard us against worry but also to help us not miss out on what’s right in front of us.

There’s nothing worse than waking up one day and realizing you’ve wished your whole life away.

The Benefits of Slowing Down

There’s something magical about an evening at home. I like to putter around the house and put things away just so.

Knowing that I have no time frame makes everything more enjoyable.

I don’t even take my coffee to go much (only when absolutely necessary).

Coffee is a leisurely drink, one to be enjoyed slowly and to be savored with every sip.

If I can’t sit down and eat my meal in peace, I’d rather wait. Eating in a hurry makes me sick.

Of course, there are times when slowing down is not possible. I’m not delusional or rebellious when things must be hurried along.

It’s just that life is hard to enjoy at lightening speed…

Why does everything have to move so fast?

As I putter around my little place, it’s nice to stand back and simply thank God for my blessings.

  • My fridge is full.
  • My bed is cozy.
  • I have running water and that includes hot water, too.

I can’t stop adding my blessings up! (But I will or else this will be a never ending post.)

Slow down.

Walk around your house and property.

Thank God for His abundant provision.

Everyday blessings

3 Things I am thankful for:

  1. Good ideas. It’s cool to think that God gives His children creativity. Any time I have a good idea, I thank God for it.
  2. Mac and Cheese. Who doesn’t love cheese and pasta?
  3. Crossword Puzzles. This is brain candy for word nerds. Coming home and completing a few puzzles is one way I relax.

It’s important to be thankful for everything–even the smallest enjoyments.

Did you know God is interested in your life?

Even the small, fun, unimportant preferences that are reflections of our personalities.

He’s not necessarily interested in the weird, hokey way many people describe:

One day I was working a crossword puzzle and God said, “Stop. I want you to only do word searches!

This sounds crazy, but over-spiritualization is a common plague within the Christian community.

God is interested because He simply loves you. His strongest desire is to be involved and invited into your everyday life.

Praise God for His blessings–both big and small.

Living by Faith

Pushing through when you’re tired is hard.

This was my first real day of having to keep moving forward when what I wanted to do was take a nap.

Everything is going well, but some days take more out of you than others.

It’s always weird, though, when you experience your first long day in a new place.

And that’s where being focused helps you out.

The whys keep you motivated because not every day will be a picnic.

This is the reason Christians must learn to live by faith and not feelings.

My feelings are all over the place; my faith has not moved.

Because here’s what keeps me excited:

I’m learning so much and it’s barely been 2 weeks! Every day I wake up so thankful to be walking the halls at Rhema.

Living by faith and not feelings means seeing through a tough situation–in my case it was a long day–to the plan of God unfolding around me.

5 good reasons

Today, I just want to give thanks. Here are 5 things I am thankful for:

1. The opportunity to go to Rhema.

Being able to sit in a classroom and learn more about the things of God is an honor.

2. My new job.

Working for Wisdom Ministries is such a blessing. I am getting a lot of great experience in how administration within a ministry operated AND the opportunity to learn more as an editor.

3. My home.

I live with the sweetest couple who have done nothing but encourage me. It’s nice to come home here.

4. The Holy Spirit.

A year ago, I received the baptism of the Holy Spirit. My relationship with God is so much richer now. I’m not sure what many of you guys believe about the subject, but I know that my life has changed for the better and that God has made this gift available to all Christians who ask for it.

5. This blog.

I can’t believe that this blog is finally more than an idea in my head! The chance to grow as a writer and to document all that I’m learning as a 25 year old is not something I take lightly.

And now here’s where you get to tell me what you’re thankful for. I want to celebrate all the blessings in your life along with you.

Thankful for Provision

I am blessed.

I am blessed.

I am blessed!

God blesses His children. Period.

And today He reminded me of His loving provision in a mighty way:

The school called me at work and told me that my tuition is taken care of! An anonymous donor called the school on my behalf.

Talk about a reason to praise God! That’s all I’ve done since getting the news.

I am thankful for God’s provision.

I am thankful for the genorisity of the donor.

On my drive home, I prayed for the donor and asked the Lord to bless he or she in a special way.

I know that He will.

We’re learning in our classes that God honors faith and every step of my journey to Tulsa has been a step of faith.

Praise God for the journey!

Praise God for friends and family who support that journey!

Here’s my question to you, my friends:

What step of faith do you need to take?

30 seconds or less

I just watched The Golden Globes for the first time. There were so many movies that I had never even heard of!

I’m not one to follow celebrities, but it was interesting to see the fashion and winners and the general hoopla surrounding the whole affair.

I’m surprised at how little time they give the winners to say thank you.

Only 30 seconds to express gratitude for projects that took a year or more to make?

I can’t even imagine what I would say or do under those circumstances, though, as a Christian, I’m often under the same pressure when asked questions about my faith.

Short answers are hard to give, yet that is what many people demand.

Explain God in 30 seconds or less…go!

Wow.

How can I explain the love of the Father, the sacrifice of the Son, and the job of the Holy Spirit in that time frame?

We are instructed to have an answer ready for any occasion.

We are also told that the Holy Spirit will tell us what to say.

And most conversations about faith ebb and flow nicely between those to paradigms.

The difficulty level, for me, comes in trying to express the fullness of joy I have found in my relationship with God.

It’s rich and deep and intimate and fun and challenging and intentional (and I could keep going).

I usually get really worked up in my explanations because there’s just so much I can say, which is why I can relate to all of the Golden Globe winners.

Sometimes I can wrap up my thankfulness in 30 seconds or less, sometimes I can’t and I keep talking until the commercial break.

Every good gift

I gotta good deal today!

I needed to replace my brown boots and the sale was amazing.

Me-maw bought me a new pair of jeans and received a coupon for 50% off a pair of ladies boots. She then turned around and gave me $10 toward the boots, so they only cost me $25.

The shoes were $65 and I paid $25…

I’m not one to pray for closer parking spots or anything, but it was so exciting to see how everything just worked out.

And there’s nothing wrong with that happening either. The book of James says that every good gift comes from the Father above.

We need to keep this scripture in mind because too often God ends up looking like Scrooge.

He loves us.

He wants what’s best for us.

Listen, this post is not meant to make God out to be a slot machine.

Corvettes won’t fall from the sky and giving an offering to a televangelist won’t make you rich.

But God does give good gifts to His children.

He will take care of you.

So, today I thank God for a good deal on my shoes.

On top of everything else He’s done, which is much bigger and more important, I am thankful for this fun gift as well.
